WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a state of hyper-suggestibility that our mind enters when passing the stages before sleep and shortly after waking. In fact when you are immersed in a good movie or book you enter a mild form of this state. Even when driving, a person can enter the hypnotic state. Hypnotic treatments have been utilized throughout human history and can be traced to ancient sleep temples in Ancient Egypt over 5,000 years ago. Hypnosis as we know it today has its origins in the unique work of Franz Anton Mesmer, an Austrian Physician who lived in the mid 18th century. Mesmer discovered the state of hypnosis but attributed its power to magnets and believed humans had chambers in their bodies that magnetic fluid flowed from. Mesmer's work was discredited on the bases of his magnetic healing theory. What was not so simple to overlook, however, was why Mesmer was so successful with hundreds of patients during his time of practice. We now know it was his ability to put them in the hyper-suggestible state which is now what we call hypnosis.
